Dear supporter,

We are halfway through session. Bills had to be heard last week in order to continue, so we now know which bills we'll be fighting until the end of session. The good news first — your emails and calls worked. Two bills that would severely restrict access to safe and legal abortion were not heard on the floor and are done for this session.

Unfortunately, through last minute tactics, Sen. Greg Treat gutted the language of SB 195 and inserted even more damaging language. SB 195 initially aimed to ban abortion if Roe v. Wade were ever overturned. Now, the bill proposes that Oklahomans vote on whether to amend the Oklahoma Constitution to include language that prohibits the right to an abortion.

Dear supporter,

As an important deadline approaches on Thursday that requires all bills to be heard on the floor in each chamber, lawmakers will decide if restricting access to safe and legal abortion is more important than expanding health care to Oklahomans. Currently, there are four bills that will restrict access to abortion still progressing through the legislature. All of these bills are harmful and do nothing to protect women’s health care. We have talked to many legislators about the problems with all of these bills. Many have been very open to hearing those concerns.

Dear supporter,

Last week, our supporters showed up to the Capitol not once, but twice, to push back against harmful anti-abortion bills. On Monday, our supporters joined together to bear witness to the Senate Health and Human Services committee meeting, which passed two harmful bills. Unfortunately, SB 195, which bans abortion if Roe v. Wade is overturned, and SB 614, which requires doctors to provide patients misinformation about an untested treatment called abortion pill "reversal," both passed the committee. They will now be considered by the full Senate.

Dear supporter,

Just now, the Senate Health and Human Services Committee passed SB 195. This is a harmful bill that would ban access to virtually all safe, legal abortion in Oklahoma. It would endanger women's health by interfering with a doctor's ability to treat a pregnant patient who is suffering a medical condition, even if it is not related to her pregnancy. SB 195 heads to the Senate floor next, and we need you to take action.

Dear supporter,

The Oklahoma Legislature wasted no time diving into policy last week. A bill passed the House floor that would allow Oklahomans to lawfully carry a gun without a permit, and a bill passed out of a committee that would modernize the HIV education curriculum in schools.

Late Friday, two harmful anti-abortion bills were placed on the agenda for the House Public Health Committee. HB 1182 aims to punish doctors for providing safe, legal abortion by threatening to revoke their medical licenses, and HB 1396 prohibits women from ending their pregnancies once the sex of the fetus has been determined, even if their health is at risk.

Dear supporter,

Session started last week, and I can’t lie — it is going to be tough. The Oklahoma Legislature has announced its priorities, and unfortunately, expanding access to health care is not one of them. Over 2,000 bills were introduced this session, and 13 restrict access to safe legal abortion. These bills range from requiring doctors to give misinformation about abortion reversal to patients; to revoking doctors’ licenses if they perform an abortion; to banning abortion outright and charging women who access abortion with first degree murder.
