Last month, Planned Parenthood health centers across the country were forced out of the nation’s Title X program because of a federally mandated gag rule. Title X is designed to ensure that everyone, no matter where they live, how much money they make, and whether or not they have health insurance, has access to basic preventive reproductive health care like birth control, cancer screenings, STD testing and treatment, and wellness exams.
We already know the devastating consequences from blocking access to reproductive health care: Kansas ranks in the bottom 30 states with the worst maternal mortality rate in the nation and statewide STD rates continue climbing. What’s more, nearly 133,000 Kansans would be eligible to enroll in KanCare if the state expanded Medicaid.
Blocking any funding to Planned Parenthood really means blocking patients from accessing health care that they need and deserve. Politicians should be finding ways to protect and expand access to care, not putting people’s health care at risk.
