Kansas Monitor - June 5

Dear supporter,

The 2019 legislative session came to its official close on May 29. Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes had one of our most successful sessions in history, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Together, we:

  • Helped sustain Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of SB 67, the medication abortion “reversal” bill. Supporters like you sent more than 3,300 messages to legislators opposing this bill.

  • Saw the end of a years-long, politically motivated lawsuit challenging Planned Parenthood’s removal from the state’s Medicaid program, KanCare.

  • Celebrated the Kansas Supreme Court's landmark decision that the Kansas Constitution protects a woman's right to safe, legal abortion.

  • Defeated an amendment in the Medicaid expansion proposal that would have “defunded” Planned Parenthood.

I’ll be honest –– Kansas is not used to being one of the states where anti-abortion legislation is defeated. Across the country, we are seeing an onslaught of dangerous legislation targeting reproductive rights. Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, Mississippi, and our neighboring state of Missouri, have all passed bills banning abortion at six or eight weeks of pregnancy. Our sister affiliate, Reproductive Health Services of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region, is in the fight of its life to maintain abortion services in the face of an increasingly political battle over their health center's license renewal process.

With President Trump in the White House and Justice Kavanaugh on the U.S. Supreme Court, state politicians are emboldened to try and ban safe, legal abortion. And while we had legislative victories in Kansas in 2019, anti-abortion politicians have already pledged to pass a constitutional amendment removing the right to abortion from our state constitution in 2020.

Now is the time to fight back. We’re organizing to protect abortion access in Kansas, a state many Missourians already turn to for health care. Join us at one of our events below, or make a contribution today to help us continue the fight.
