Last week, after an extraordinary, bipartisan effort, the Kansas House passed Medicaid expansion 69-54. This is a huge step towards ensuring that 130,000 Kansans get access to the health care they need and deserve.
An amendment was added to the bill forbidding Medicaid funds for abortion services. The federal Hyde Amendment already forbids taxpayer funding for abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or threat to a woman's life. The ability to access safe, legal abortion should not depend on how much money someone makes or where they live. This amendment is a direct attack on women with low incomes in Kansas and their ability to access health care.
An amendment to remove Planned Parenthood from the Medicaid program FAILED 55-69. This is a win for Kansans who come to Planned Parenthood for preventive health services covered by Medicaid, like birth control, STD testing, and cancer screenings.
We will continue to monitor for additional “defunding” attempts and keep you informed as Medicaid expansion works its way to the Senate. Senate leadership does not support Medicaid expansion, so advocates across the state — including Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes and supporters like you — will have to keep the pressure up to get a clean Medicaid expansion bill on the Governor’s desk.
Today, the House will debate House Bill 2274, which requires physicians providing medication abortions to inform their patients of an untested, experimental treatment called medication abortion “reversal.” This troubling practice has not been tested for safety or effectiveness, and could put women’s health at risk.
The House will debate a whopping 37 bills today, and the Senate will debate 13 more. It’s more important than ever to remind our elected officials to pass policies that protect access to sexual and reproductive health care.
