Guest Blog: Toasting to Advocacy

The craft beer community is generally progressive minded, and when Donald Trump won the Presidential Election, a gloomy cloud descended upon many staff and customers at Bier Station. Among our major concerns was the biggest threat in decades to reproductive rights posed by the new Administration and Congress.

One of Bier Station's business goals is to utilize the goodwill among craft breweries to support nonprofits through fundraisers. As our country faces some very dark days ahead, we decided to leverage this community emphasis and become more politically involved as a business. But how does a business primarily known for organizing tap lists accomplish that?

We found our path forward, believe it or not, in Revolutionary War America, most notably The Green Dragon in Boston. The dingy, basement tavern was a hotbed of political discourse, including the planning of Boston Tea Party, and where Paul Revere unhitched his horse to begin his famed ride to Lexington. We also relished the thought of grasping America’s historical legacy back from the new, so-called “Tea Party” movement.

One advantage we have over our nation's forefathers and mothers is social media, and we plan to use our Green Dragon Room at Bier Station Facebook page to activate people. Initial programs will be held in our upstairs (indoor) Biergarten space and include how to run for office, presentations by organizations – like Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes -- that need our help, and how to make a difference at the state level, which is very, very important now.

The time to fight for our country is now. Hopefully, in the near future, we can toast some well-earned victories.
